In May 1967, inspired by the Cultural Revolution in China, a labour dispute turned into large scale demonstrations against British Colonial rule across Hong Kong. Pro China leftists carried The Little Red Book and chanted communist slogans, calling for Hong Kong to be returned to China. Outbreaks of violence followed which resulted in numerous deaths. Although order was eventually restored, the confidence in the colony’s future declined and many Hong Kong residents sold their businesses and property and relocated overseas.
